Well, the party of cut and run has made if official. All that “republican propaganda” which highlighted the Democrats lack of any clear plan for Iraq, labeled them the party of “cut and run” has just proven its accuracy.

The two top Senate Democrats on foreign policy yesterday said they will introduce a resolution in January calling for troops to start being withdrawn from Iraq by this summer, a move that Sen. John McCain said would put the U.S. in the worst of both worlds.

Sen. Carl Levin, Michigan Democrat in line to lead the Senate Armed Services Committee, said his party’s election victory last week vindicates calls for a change of strategy in Iraq and said withdrawals would need to start this year, despite White House opposition to any timetables, a stance it also reiterated on yesterday’s political shows.

I am not surprised, but I am saddened. The political fight will come in the days to follows as congress has not authority over US troops, that sits squarely with the Commander and Chief. Congress, however, dose control the purse strings, and any troop deployment exists only so long as a supply chain can support it. If the democrats cut the funding then the President will have no choice but to bring the troops home.

Most concerning is the message this sends to our allies and our enemies. It will weaken one and embolden the other.

There is an old adage about good friends makes the worst enemies, and that adage seems doubly correct when politics are added the mix. Take for instance the case of Joe Lieberman who, having once been a member of the Democrat Party, is now treated with such contempt and ridicule by his previous party.

Lieberman has a long track record in support of the Democratic party, and a voting record which should, under logical conditions, endear him to the Democratic party. It was, in my opinion, very short sighted for the Dem’s to overlook all of that it an effort to bring a more liberal / anti-war face to Connecticut. The results, frankly, serve them right.

But ironic justice is often lost on the victim.

Lieberman was elected with a new party label, but he’s still the same ol’ Joe: the quintessential politician who is poorly mimicking the maverick “independent” by trashing friend and foe alike.

Call me an “Independent Democrat”, he says. It’s a label which gives squirmy Joe the perfect cover, permitting him to simultaneously lift his finger to wind while using his other hand to stab the Democratic Party in the back. That party, though, contrary to Lieberman’s suggestion, without question bleeds red, white, and blue.

Ouch. Did Kos, along with most of the Democratic party, forget that the knife Lieberman is wielding now was pulled from his own back once placed there by his previous party?

I am not a big fan of Lieberman, who is far to liberal for my taste. However, I do respect his courage, the consistency of his voting record especially on the War on Terror. I do not give much credit to the thought that he may jump over to the Republican ranks in congress. Even though it is the Republican’s which put here into office this time around, there is no honor is such a move. I trust, despite his recent comments, that he would know better.

Or perhaps he will justify all the negativity the liberal blogs have given him.
