Its official, Hoyer was elected House Majority leader by popular vote. The final score, a crushing 149 to 86.
A week after winning back control of the U.S. Congress, Democrats in the House defied incoming speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday and bypassed a vocal Iraq war critic to elevate her moderate deputy to majority leader.
It marked an embarrassing first defeat for Pelosi, a California liberal who had endorsed Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a key player in the anti-war effort that helped Democrats sweep to power in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The secret vote behind closed doors was 149-86.
Democrats embraced Hoyer, a Maryland moderate who has been Pelosi’s deputy while she served the past three years as minority leader. The two have had a somewhat strained relationship.
This is quite a blow for Palosi who doesn’t take challenge very well. I am sure this will only increase the strain on the new Democrat-lead congress.
This dose show a couple of things:
- There are some good sense Democrats who knew how bad it would be to elect the most scandalized man in congress to such a position.
- Paolsi doesn’t have the control she thiks she dose.
- Democrats are liars, as 90 democrats had very publicly committed to Hoyer yesterday.
I knew this congress would be more entertaining that the past. Once can only hope they stay this divided and argumentative for the next couple of years while the American People come to their senses.
