Dobson & Huckabee

I grew up listening to Focus on the Family with James Dobson. It was part of the normal breakfast routeen during my school years. I have always respected him and his single minded focus on family values. He was, and is, a good Christian man.

I am, however, a bit surprised that he has come out, at this late date in support of Huckabee. This from the AP:

James Dobson, one of the nation’s most prominent evangelical Christian leaders, is about to endorse former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, The Associated Press has learned.

Dobson, founder of Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Focus on the Family, talked to the GOP presidential hopeful Thursday and later was to release a statement explaining his choice, said Gary Schneeberger, a spokesman for Dobson.

Huckabee had long sought Dobson’s endorsement, believing he is the best fit to advance Dobson’s conservative, moral worldview.

I am less surprised by his choice in Huckabee than his timing. After all, isn’t it a bit late? I don’t see that Huckabee could come back from so far behind McCain. It would have been better had Dobson come out with this before Super Tuesday.

Dobson find McCain about as acceptable as I do, it would seem:

Dobson released a statement Tuesday that criticized McCain for his support of embryonic stem cell research, his opposition to a federal anti-gay marriage amendment and for his temper and use of foul language.
He said if McCain were the nominee, he would not cast a ballot for president for the first time in his life.

HotAir makes a good point
:

What’s Huckabee’s game here? He’d need to win every remaining primary with something like 60% of the vote to overtake McCain. Is he just banking this as yet another piece of social-con cred for his next run in 2011? Or is it a carrot to wave at McCain to remind him that he’d bring along plenty of red-state voters as part of the ticket?

As much as I am afraid to see it, it looks like McCain will go all the way. I just hope he has the mojo to beat out Himary/Obama.

USA vs Berkeley

I am sure you have heard about the City of Berkeley trying to ban the Marines from their fine city. If not you can read about it here, here, and here.

I stumbled on this very good Viedo from Senator Jim DeMint’s team, and thought I would share it.

Hot air has a piece on the non-apology from the Mayor of Berkeley.

Gun Control at its finest

Every act of gun related crime spurs the anti-gun crowed to a greater and greater frenzy. This week along should have worked the Brady Bunch into a fervor.

Yesterday a man with two guns went on a rampage at a City Council meeting in Kirkwood Missouri, just outside of St. Louis. He killed 5 men before the police took him down.

From the NY Times:

A man who police say went on a shooting rampage at City Hall in a St. Louis suburb Thursday night had recently lost a lawsuit against the city stemming from disorderly conduct convictions that resulted from his frequent clashes with city officials.

[…]

Charles Lee Thornton used two weapons in killing five people and wounding two others at the City Council meeting in Kirkwood, Mo., police said. The first of the five people killed, Police Sgt. William Biggs, was shot outside the building with a large-caliber revolver and then stripped of his weapon, said Tracy Panus, spokeswoman for the St. Louis County Police Department.

The suspect then carried both guns into the council chamber, where he opened fire at the start of a council session while repeating the phrase, “Shoot the mayor,” according to a witness.

The rampage ended when police officers stormed the chamber, shooting and killing Mr. Thornton, Ms. Panus said. They heard the gunfire from the police department, which is right behind City Hall.

Today a young women killed two fellow students at Louisiana Technical Collage in Baton Ruge before killing herself.

From the Associate Press:

A young woman killed two female students in a college classroom at a vocational college Friday, then killed herself, police said.

The students apparently were shot in their seats in the second-floor classroom at Louisiana Technical College, Sgt. Don Kelly said.

Here lies the irony of a “gun free zone” as both of these areas where off limits to people carrying firearms – even if they where otherwise licensed to do so. I am sure that both of these people must have just been unaware they where breaking the law by bring a gun, had they known I am sure this would have all be avoided.

So the Brady Bunch and the rest of the anti-gun crowed will call for tighter control on guns as a result; all the while failing to realize that laws are only followed by the law abiding citizens – like those who don’t bring guns into gun-free zones. The same people who lawfully own firearms, are careful and diligent in training their children in gun safety, and who are rendered defenseless by anti-gun laws that the criminals have no intention of following anyway.

Had there been a lawful owner of a license to carry a canceled firearm who could have lawfully carried his handgun into the Kirkwood City Council meeting would this violent murderer have killed 5 people? What if the woman in Louisiana had decided to keep killing students until her gun was empty?

The bottom line is that removing guns from the hands of law abiding citizens only makes them targets.

Ban all guns

Where Back!

I took the blog down about a year about so I could pack up, move from Ohio to the fine state of Texas, and spend more time close to my family. I am happy to say that has all be accomplished, and so I am brining the blog back online. Sadly I do not expect to have the same time to post, but I will add posts as and when I see a good opportunity to do so.

I am not so delusional as to think there are people out there that actually missed me - after all, what is one more blog in the world?
